Activity and physical movement are both very important in lessening the symptoms and the impact of Parkinson’s Disease. In a 2019 article published by UW Health, the following list of exercises was shared as especially beneficial for individuals with Parkinson’s.
i like to move it, move it…
- Aerobic or cardio activity – such as walking (outside, inside or on a treadmill), dancing, swimming, bicycling (or stationary bicycling). Dancing is often popular with Parkinson’s patients. It is also great for improving balance.
- Strength training – such as weight lifting or exercises with stretchy resistance bands. When your muscles are stronger, your overall energy level increases as well.
- Balance – Tai chi, an ancient Chinese practice, involves a series of movements done in a slow, focused manner with deep breathing. Tai chi is just one example of an activity to help enhance your sense of balance.
- Range-of-Motion Stretching Exercises – these are very important to maintain or improve flexibility over time.
moving day…
This autumn, I will be participating in Moving Day USA – Virtual Walk…an annual event benefitting the Parkinson’s Foundation.
Although this year’s event will look different than in years past, it promises, as always, to be a fun-filled, family-friendly event for all ages and abilities. We will be able to enjoy a variety of movement activities like yoga, dance, Pilates, Tai Chi, boxing, stretching, and much more and we will celebrate the importance of movement in our lives.
Did you know that someone is diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease every 9 minutes in the United States? No one should have to face Parkinson’s alone. That is why the Parkinson’s Foundation provides a community of support to give people the resources and help they need to live well with Parkinson’s.
